Measles Case Reported
Eastern Idaho Public Health has reported a case of measles in a child in Eastern Idaho.
The child was unvaccinated against measles and was not hospitalized for the infection.

Characteristics of Measles
-Prodrome of fever (up to 105°F)
-Cough, Coryza, Conjunctivitis
-Pathognomonic enanthema (Koplik spots)
-Followed by a maculopapular rash
 -Rash appears about 14 days after exposure
 -Rash characterstically spreads from head to lower extremeties

Testing Guidance
-PCR is preferred diagnostic testing
 -May consider serology IgM and IgG
-Contact EIPH epidemiology department for guidance and testing facilitation as needed

Infection Prevention
-Post Exposure Prophylaxis MMR should be given within 72 hours of initial measles exposure
-Post Exposure Prophylaxis immunoglobulin should be administered within 6 days of initial exposure
 -Immunoglobulin can be given IM (IMIG) or IV (IVIG). *IVIG should be prioritized for adults at high risk of severe disease

Healthcare Settings
-Encourage people with suspected measles to call before arrival to limit exposure to others
-Provide facemasks to patients and promptly isolate in room with door closed
-Implement standard airborne precautions
-Move to negative pressure room if available

Reporting
-Report suspected and confirmed measles cases to the Epidemiology Department at 208-533-3152 (phone) or fax 208-533-3143
